چکیده

Experimental transmission of B.bigemina between cattle and ticks Boophilus decoloratus were carried out in the laboratory. Body bags were applied on the bodies of two calves infected with B. bigemina. These were the four month old splenectomized male Friesian calf number 10B and the two month old intact male Ayrshire calf number 28B. B. decoloratus larvae were then introduced into these body bags to make contact with the calves, Engorged female ticks were then collected several days later as the dropped from the calves. Haemolymph smears of the engorged females B. decoloratus derived from calves 28B and 10B revealed 93 (35%) and 112 (34%) infection rates with kinetes of B. bigemina respectively. Twelve percent mortality rate was reported for ticks derived from calf 28B while 5% was reported for ticks derived from calf 10B before the commencement of egg laying. The blood of the two calves were found to show declining packed cell volume (PCV) values and red blood cell counts. B. decoloratus was found to transmit B. bigemina in cattle with a high level of success.

Babesia bovis and B. bigemina DNA detected in cattle and ticks from Zimbabwe by polymerase chain reaction.

From blood collected from 94 cattle at 12 locations in the eastern and northeastern areas of Zimbabwe, DNA was extracted and analysed by polymerase chain reaction with primers previously reported to be specific for Babesia bigemina and Babesia borvis. Overall, DNA of Babesia bigemina was detected in the blood of 33/94 (35%) cattle and DNA from B. bovis was detected in 27/58 (47%) of cattle. The...

The retention of Babesia bigemina infection by Boophilus decoloratus exposed to imidocarb dipropionate during engorgement.

Babesia bigemina was retained in the vector Boophilus decoloratus for a complete generation despite the use of the babesicide, imidocarp dipropionate, to prevent reinfection. This drug did not sterilize ticks of the B. bigemina infection as has been suggested for B. bovis.

The impact of 2 dipping systems on endemic stability to bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis in cattle in 4 communally grazed areas in Limpopo Province, South Africa.

A 12-month study was conducted in 4 communal grazing areas in the Bushbuckridge region, Limpopo Province, South Africa. The main objective was to investigate the impact of reduced acaricide application on endemic stability to bovine babesiosis (Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis) and anaplasmosis (Anaplasma marginale) in the local cattle population. To this end 60 cattle in each communal grazin...

A sero-epidemiological survey of blood parasites in cattle in the north-eastern Free State, South Africa.

A survey to determine the incidence of parasites in cattle (n = 386) was conducted in the north eastern Free State between August 1999 and July 2000. Giemsa-stained blood smears were negative for blood parasites. A total of 94% of the cattle were sero-positive for Babesia bigemina by indirect fluorescent antibody test while 87% were sero-positive for Anaplasma by enzyme-linked immunosorbent ass...

Development of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for detection of IgM antibodies to Babesia bigemina in cattle.

A crude antigenic preparation of Babesia bigemina was used to develop an ELISA for the detection of IgM antibodies. Optimal dilutions of the antigen, using positive and negative reference sera, were determined by checkerboard titrations. Negative sera from cattle imported from tick-free areas, serum samples collected from infected B. bigemina cattle were used to validate the test. The specifici...
